Using a timer, begin teaching your child how time works. When children understand time, they’re better at managing it. This builds independence and a stronger sense of control.
Try setting a 15-minute timer this week before bedtime. Have your child be in control of starting and stopping the timer if possible. Give them a heads up at each 5-minute increment.
The same concept can be applied to days as well. Place a piece of paper on the refrigerator with 5 boxes as the countdown to school starting. Have them cross off a box each morning. This can also be used for other exciting events like Grandma coming to visit, holidays and the weekend.
Time Timers, about $20 on Amazon, are a great visual timer children can learn to set and monitor themselves.
